Visual Attention and Cognition
It has been proposed that saccadic eye movements to visual targets are preceded by covert shifts of attention to these locations. In this review, we discuss the evidence for this hypothesis and the role of brain regions in directing rapid shifts of attention and gaze. We suggest there is a common neural architecture mediating both these types of movement.
متن کاملAttention in Autonomous Robotic Visual Search
One important element of autonomy for mobile robots, both terrestrial and planetary, is the ability to search for and find targets of interest whether they be important for navigation, for science missions, for localization or for manipulation. In this paper, we introduce a novel method of autonomous visual search that exploits the use of attention in the form of a saliency map that is used to ...
متن کاملExpectation (and attention) in visual cognition.
Visual cognition is limited by computational capacity, because the brain can process only a fraction of the visual sensorium in detail, and by the inherent ambiguity of the information entering the visual system. Two mechanisms mitigate these burdens: attention prioritizes stimulus processing on the basis of motivational relevance, and expectations constrain visual interpretation on the basis o...

متن کاملA neural theory of visual attention: bridging cognition and neurophysiology.
A neural theory of visual attention (NTVA) is presented. NTVA is a neural interpretation of C. Bundesen's (1990) theory of visual attention (TVA). In NTVA, visual processing capacity is distributed across stimuli by dynamic remapping of receptive fields of cortical cells such that more processing resources (cells) are devoted to behaviorally important objects than to less important ones. By use...
